Wow, it's been a while. I lack motivation to write most days, which leads to loooooong gaps in between. Anyways, it's been a pretty interesting week I guess. The (disappointing) Superbowl (with some awesome company), an unexpected snow, the opening of the Olympics, and Valentines Day. All fairly exciting events. Of course as I mentioned the results of the Superbowl were disappointing and the snow melted just as quickly as it came.
However, the Olympics. Now that is more exciting! I love Olympic seasons, summer AND winter. To get to watch the worlds best compete to be crowned the "Gold Medalist" of their event. World championships are great, but the Olympic Gold Medal is THE medal of all medals. It compares to nothing. It's in a class all of it's own. Something no one earns easily. I have so much respect for these athletes. None are there because of 'good genes' or 'luck' or even 'talent'. Those help, but it is by sheer hard work, determination, and love of the game that they have made it this far. These athletes put hours upon hours into these sports every day. Taking one day off could cost them the gold medal. So they work harder, run faster, train longer. It's so inspiring. You can see it on their faces when they compete. It's amazing that they love what they are doing so much. Trust me, I was a college athlete, I got just a small glimpse of what they go through, and it's a lot. Don't let anyone tell you 'jocks' are just dumb party people who get an easy ride off some small talent. No way! If anyone deserves our respect, it is these athletes. They put aside a social life, relationships, among many other things for their dreams. They move across the country, or the globe, to train with the best. They train seven days a week. They rarely, if ever, go out partying. (Do you seriously think they will risk the Olympics for a few hours of fun?) They don't do drugs for fear of compromising their athletic status. So what do they do? They train, eat right, take care of their body, sleep, and if time allows it they spend time with friends and family. That is what athletes do. So remember when you are watching the Olympics, these people deserve to be there. They are the best of the best and have worked harder than you could ever imagine to be there.
"For too long the world has failed to recognise that the Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement are about fine athletics and fine art.”
