Not that I knew there was a mystery to solve, but apparently there was. Don't worry I cracked the case and now we have answers. So apparently my mom got this idea in her head that Bella, my beautiful little Bella, was not a Main Coon, but instead she thinks that Bella is a Ragdoll. Both great cats, but I was pretty sure my baby was a Main Coon. So of course I set out on finding proof that Bella was in fact a Main Coon.
Characteristics of Ragdolls:
Go limp when held. Not all of them do this, most do though because they are such a relaxed breed. (Bella does this)
People oriented. They become very attached to their owners. By nature they are a very social animal and simply love interaction with the people around them. (Bella)
They are calm yet love to play but they won't be rough while they are doing it. Gentleness is part of the breed. (A little too soon to tell on this one)
All Ragdolls have blue eyes. (Bella has green-gold)
There are six color patterns- seal point, blue point, chocolate point, lilac point, red point and cream point. Most of these look like Siamese colorings to me. (Bella is torti)
They act more like dogs retrieving toys, loyalty, following the owner. (Bella)
They are born white and their colors develop over time and they don't reach the full color pattern until they are two to three years old. (Bella's colors have never changed)
Females weigh about 15 to 20 pounds (Bella is seven at eight months)
They like to be held like a baby. (Bella does)
Long hair (Bella)
There is no doubt Bella has a lot of Ragdoll features, but then again the Ragdoll and Main Coon are very similar breeds. The color pattern and eyes were enough for me to say nope she's not a Ragdoll. Now lets look at the Main Coon.
Characteristics of Main Coons:
They have a glossy coat that is long, heavy and water resistant. It falls smoothly, and is almost maintenance-free. (Bella)
Long, bushy tail. (Anyone that has ever seen Bella can testify she has the longest tail a cat has ever had.)
The ears are more heavily furred both on inside and the tips. (Bella except for the tips)
Big, round, tufted feet. (Bella has huge paws for being so young)
Large eyes and ears. (Bella has big round eyes)
Long, square muzzle. (She has a longer muzzle, but I'm not sure about the square part)
Tall, muscular, big-boned cats. Females weigh 9-12 pounds. (Bella is getting really long and tall)
Dispositions remain kittenish throughout their lives; they are big, gentle, good-natured goofs. (We can only hope)
They have a distinctive, chirping trill which they use for everything. (Bella! Bella! Bella! She chirps more than the meows.)
Highly people-oriented cats following you from room to room and wait outside a closed door for you to emerge. (Bella)
Throughout their history there has been no restriction on the patterns and colors acceptable, with the exception of the pointed Siamese pattern.
Eye colors for all coat colors range through green, gold, and green-gold. (Bella is getting really green eyes outlined with a golden color. They have changed about five times already)
So my conclusion was thatBella is in fact a Main Coon with some odd Ragdoll characteristics. You have to admit they are both excellent breeds and either one would have been fantastic, but there is no way she is a Ragdoll. Mystery solved!
