Post Meet Update!

So I will use Coach's words to my dear friend Kallyn (aka Kali) over at the high jump pits today, "Shannon had her best day ever today!" Just so you know, Coach doesn't throw out words like those often. In fact he usually doesn't say much at all, unless you do really well. He doesn't discriminate against the 'better' athletes and the 'worse' athletes either. He gets excited when anyone PRs no matter how good they are, but you know when Coach is telling other people that someone did really well. If you do good he will be all "good job" and that's the end of it, but if you just wow him, that's when he gets all excited and tells everyone he sees. Which apparently was today for me, that has only happened like two or three times in my career at Charlotte.

So stop rambling and get to it! Alright, well as I stated my goals going into this meet was to jump 10 feet and jump on my 12 foot pole. Now I didn't even realize what goal I was setting for myself when I set that one. I was just thinking about where I was last year at the end of the year and my last good meet (The meet before conference ,because who really jumps well in the rain?) So that meet was at Davidson, on brand new pits that were super hard, but I jumped 9'11 3/4 (which is basically 10') on my 12' 100 pole. So my goal was, hey lets do that again! Not even realizing that my personal best for an indoor meet was a measly 9'6.25 and only once have I used my 12' pole this early in the year, and lets just say that didn't go well. So my goal for the day was getting on the biggest pole I have jumped on and jumping over my personal best for indoor... A pretty hefty goal I must say.

However, I DID IT! I jumped on two poles for the first time today, which was great! I cleared 9'6 and 10' on first attempts. Oh and just to clarify how a meet goes. The hosting school gets to set opening height and you can pick if you want to come in at that height or higher. After that they go up every six inches and you get three attempts at every height until you miss all three jumps at a height and you are out. Making on first attempts is what you are supposed to do, because if you miss it will count against you. So as I said my goals were to jump on the 12' and clear 10' which I did, but I thought it would be simultaneous. The plan in my head was jump 9'6 on my little meet pole (11'6 110) and then move to my bigger pole (12' 100), but that wasn't Coach's plan. He wanted me to take a jump at 10' with my 11'6 (which I haven't cleared 10' on since I've been in high school), but amazingly enough I did! So then I stitched poles once the bar was raised to 10'6 and well the first attempt wasn't that great, but the second and third were so close! I can say with all honesty that was the best meet I have ever jumped (Coach agrees) and that it was a great way to start out the season. I will also mention briefly that between the Charlotte girls I placed highest! (Only by a miss) Since we have a girl that was a power house in high school and specifically recruited for vault because she was so good, I will say I am really happy about that, and surprised too. I also moved up the all time top 10 list for UNCC and now I'm sitting at a nice comfortable 6Th place, at least for now. I went from 8Th to 6Th, so that's improvement and six more inches gets me to 5Th, totally doable.

Overall it was a great meet. Coach is happy. I'm happy. My dad is happy. Things are going pretty good right now. Coach is already turning the wheels in his brain about moving up poles and possibly getting some 12'6 poles for me! So my friends, that was my very long and exciting meet update for you. The next meet is January 15-16 at Virginia Tech. It will be a while before then, so lots of things to work on! Hope you guys have a great weekend and I will be talking to you again soon.

(PS- That picture really isn't at App. It was last year indoor conference, but if give you an idea.)
